IDINA MENZEL Concert in East Lansing, 11.5.2008

Preface: All (well, most) of my pictures are in the East Lansing thread in the 'Idina Shows' section. I've also posted links to the videos there, but you can find them on my Youtube channel as well. My handle is WickedGreenGirl2677 :)

Ohhhh my gosh, I don’t think I can ever come down from this high. First, this concert was infinitely better than the Detroit concert. Idina was happy and so into it; it was so brilliant. I brought my sister with me, which made it so much more personal and fun, too. So, I’ll try to remember all of the brilliant stuff, but I’m still in a little bit of shock, lol ;)
We had the most awesome seats. Fourth row, center, but the theatre was at such a slant that we were just above Idina’s eyelevel. So she was kinda looking at the camera a few times, methinks… But the seats were remarkable, and from where we were the sound was phenomenal.
- When she first came out, I recognized her top – it was the same one she wore in the AOL Sessions videos! LOVE! Hair in ponytail, super awesome shoes, cute belt.. She looked fantastic. By ‘Roxanne’ (3rd song) she had kicked off the shoes (YES!) and was totally loving the stage.
- Don’t Let Me Down – I love that the concert started with this song in stead of ‘I Stand.’ It has much more of an opening number feel.
- Here – By far one of my favorite Idina songs, she was dancing and looking very happy. At the beginning she asked if anyone was excited about last night (the election) and everyone cheered, and she was saying how it is a great day to be in this country, that the good guys had won. Then she launched into the song, and it was super sweet and lovely. My sister calls it the “China Song” and now loves it more :) Oh, and Idina said that we had very good ‘Uh’s :D
- Roxanne – AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! This was sooo great! She did the little intro and told the story that polyhymnia has already told (see previous posts) about the girl in the hotel. Hilarious! Before singing, while the band was doing the intro over and over, she decided to walk around the theatre a little, and introduced herself to people in the front rows. There was a little girl named Elinor that she found and told how cute and pretty she was, to which we all cheered, haha. She was pretty cute. Then she got back onto the stage (which was only 2 steps from the floor) and took off her shoes – you know she’s comfortable when she takes off the shoes, right? ;) And this song was sooo phenomenal, she totally rocked it out, but not on the ground like normal, but dancing all around the stage. She loved the huge stage and was hopping up & down and then she was doing these jump-splits in the air – it was hilarious! Ohh man, good times :D
- Brave – Each of the two times I’ve heard this live, I’ve been blown away. I’m not really a big fan of the song on the c.d., but her power in a close, small theatre is undeniable, and she was beautiful. Sang on a stool.
- Company -- Okay, I loved this song. She had to start over, because she wanted to hit a certain note. And hit it she did. I loved that she used her really high register for this. Even though it did get kind of boring, and I did kind of tune out, I loved the Idina vibe. I think this was the song where Holly was gone, and Idina made the pregnant-lady-has-to-pee comment.
- Embracable You -- Winner of the funniest moment of the night! The poor lighting guy (Tyler, whom she kept calling Taylor) couldn’t just give her a spotlight like she wanted, so she was hastling him, and it was hilarious. He got it so that at least it was fairly dark for her, and she said, “I’ll find the light. The diva always finds the light.” Ha! Then, once she started, she got the giggles and was talking to Joe the pianist and like rubbing against him and it was so funny. She said that if he had a real piano, you know she’d be laying on top of it. She then proceeded to LAY ON THE FLOOR and pretend she was on top of a piano! Hilarious!
- Haftora/Rise Up – I always love this. It’s my favorite song. So I won’t really go into how totally brilliant it is. But it was funny, because right before she was talking about going to Toronto right after the concert. “Going across the border,” she said. Then she got a funny look on her face and went, “Oh, do you have to have a passport to go there?!” The audience and band replied with “YES!” and she got all nervous, because she didn’t think she had her passport! So after she sang the song, she was like, “All I could think about during that song was my passport!” *Laughs* Then (to the tune of ‘Rise Up’): “Passport, passport, where are you? They aren’t going to let me through!” HAHAHA sooo funny.
- I Stand – LOVED. I liked the Indian-like feel to the intro, very groovy. And of course the ‘Stand Up For Your Rights’ part was also very cool. My sister and I got video of that, so I’ll deffo post that later. So cute, with all these people dancing with her on stage. She said that it was the first time she’d done that, and maybe she should keep doing it… but then again this concert was very ‘accessible’ because of the stage, so maybe not ;)
- No Day But Today – The song, of course, was gorgeous. I think we got vid of this, too. But the best part was when she climbed over the gate thing and just walked up the stairs into the audience and started saying ‘hi’ and everyone was singing. She was very close, and I wanted a picture, but was afraid of getting caught, lol. (Perhaps this was what was viewed as ‘amateurish’ by others? Could be…)
- My Own Worst Enemy – Yay, such a fun song, totally stuck in my head right now. She got on her knees and had lots of pony-tail swinging (of which I have excellent photos :D)
- For Good – So sweet, so lovely. She looked very pleased.
- Defying Gravity – Got some PHENOMENAL video of this, too!! So tickled! This was so great, and so fun to share with my sister. I think the song was so great, and she hit every note beautifully.
- So, yep! She totally skipped ‘Where Do I Begin?,’ which was fine. The entire night was completely Taye-less – no shouts about him, no mentions of him -- which was really nice for a change. So this song being deleted was okay, because it made the night all the more about Idina Menzel and not ‘Idina-Menzel-who-is-married-to-Taye-Diggs.’
- Oh, yes, she brought out Deb for her birthday which was super cute :)
- STAGE DOOR: How, may I ask, have we been blessed in NOVEMBER with having this gorgeous weather?! This is MICHIGAN, people! We’re supposed to be having three inches of snow by now! So there was a large-ish clump of people outside the doors, and after a little while Deb came out and said that they’re on a tight schedule, no pictures, she might sign stuff. So we waited like half an hour, watched all the stuff go by (which was funny) and Idina came out and signed EVERYTHING for everyone! She totally didn’t have to do that, but wow, what a nice thing to do. I think she really liked us, though ;) So I got my c.d. signed and my sister got her ticket signed. So gracious.

Geez I love Idina :) Thank you so so much for posting!!!

I've never been able to go to one of Idina's concerts, but reading stuff like this really really makes me want to!!! (not that I didn't want to a ton before lol :b )I can't believe that she signed everyone's stuff!! That is so sweet, and it really makes me think she is even more amazing because she cares so much about her fans!! If-I mean WHEN I see Idina, I'll make sure I write something as detailed as this because posts like yours are as close as I can get to the real thing. Thanks you so much for all the detail!! :D Oo and I really love her quote about finding the light too hahah.

Hotel Story

Oh, yes, no problem!
That afternoon Idina was getting her hair trimmed and nails done at the hotel. ("My hair is sooo split, it's disgusting," she said.) She mentioned something about voting to the two girls working on her, asked them if they were going to. The girl doing her nails said that, no, she didn't know who to vote for. Idina, taken aback, asked why. "Well, I don't like the old guy, and the other one just freaks me out." Idina got a frowny look on her face and was like, "Oh, really, why? Is it because he's a democrat, or because he's black...?" The girl didn't respond and Idina said that she soon left. Haha :D
